It is commonly believed that almost everyone is going to Heaven, that there are only a few who will find themselves in the place of Outer Darkness.
The term Outer Darkness is described in the book of Matthew many times as a place of “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matt. 8:12, 22:13, 25:30). This place of gnashing of teeth is also described in Matthew as “a furnace of fire” and a place of “wailing” (Matt 13:42, 13:50).
The reason that we believe that both our LDS friends, and our non-LDS friends, are going to this place of Outer Darkness is that in Matthew 7:13-14 we read:
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
By this we know that the commonly held belief that many are going to Heaven is false. Many people are going to the place of Outer Darkness, a place of destruction. This place of destruction is talked about in II Thessalonians 1:9 where we read:
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
We will take a look at the obedience to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in a minute, but for the moment it is enough to know that this place of Outer Darkness is described as a place of “weeping,” “wailing,” “gnashing of teeth,” “a furnace of fire,” of “destruction” and “everlasting destruction.”
If we did not warn our friends that they are on this way that leads to destruction, we would be like a design engineer who -- because he doesn't want to be the bearer of bad news -- refuses to tell a person that the ship they are on is going to sink!
